Origin of the Godzilla Name
The Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 is the 10th-generation GT-R, produced 1999-2002. It is the last pure RB26-powered chassis in the Skyline GT-R lineage — the R35 switched to a VR38DETT V6, ending the RB26 inline-six era forever.
On the track, the R34 GT-R obliterated an era of motorsport. Skyline GT-Rs swept JGTC, Nürburgring, and Macau GP through the 1990s — leading some race series to write rules specifically to handicap them. Australian motoring media coined the nickname "Godzilla", which has stuck globally.
Specs & Codename
Note: 280 HP was the Japanese gentleman's agreement figure. Real-world factory output was closer to 320, with owners commonly tuning to 500-700 HP without major rebuild.
In the Forza Horizon Series
The R34 GT-R has been an S-class regular since FH1 and is in every entry. FH6 includes three variants:
- 1999 V-Spec (standard)
- 2002 V-Spec II Nür (Nürburgring special edition, factory limited run)
- Forza Edition R34 (series-exclusive tune with skill bonuses)
Initial PI sits around A class (700-750). Build headroom is enormous — can be tuned all the way to X class 999 PI.
Tuning Recommendations
The R34 is Forza's universal Swiss Army knife — viable in nearly any event type:
- Touge: S1 class (750-800) + soft tires + stiffened suspension. AWD provides cornering confidence.
- Drift: Switch to RWD mode (available in Forza tuning menu), add a turbo. Becomes a king-tier intermediate drift weapon.
- Drag: S2 class + advanced turbo + ported intake. Real measured 0-100 of under 2.5 seconds.
- Off-road: Not a strength, but Forza off-road tires + raised suspension can make it work in mud.
Player Lore
- "Bayside Blue" — the signature blue paint, the visual identity of every R34.
- "Paul Walker's car" — the silver R34 from Fast & Furious 4 made this car a global icon.
- "US Import Ban" — Due to the US 25-year rule, R34s could not legally enter the United States until 2024. This gave it a "dream car" status among American enthusiasts.
- "Wife car" — Chinese gamer slang for one's most-beloved car. The R34 is the top candidate.
