Real-World History

Honda's Type R sub-brand started with the NSX-R in 1992, but the EK9 Civic Type R from 1997 made the badge accessible to ordinary buyers. Sold only in Japan, the EK9 ran a hand-ported B16B engine producing 182 horsepower from 1.6 liters — figures unmatched at the time for a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder of that displacement. The chassis used seam-welded reinforcements and weighed just over a thousand kilograms, so the power-to-weight ratio approached that of contemporary BMW M cars.

EK9 Forza Horizon car chassis details: code EK9; class at stock tune B; category Modern Sports; tags include JDM, FF, VTEC, hot-hatch.

In the Forza Horizon Series

The EK9 first appeared in Forza Motorsport 4 and migrated to the Horizon side with the 2014 Riviera entry. Horizon 4 introduced the rare Spoon Sports tuning house variant, and Horizon 6 finally adds the EP3 second-generation Type R alongside the original to let players compare the two front-drive eras directly.

The EK9 Forza Horizon car appears across 4 entries: FH3, FH4, FH5, FH6. As a EK9 Forza Horizon car entry, it sits in the B-class bracket at stock tune.

Tuning Notes

The car's low stock weight rewards tire and aero upgrades over engine work. Stay below 250 horsepower to preserve the chassis balance; pushing past that figure overwhelms the front tires under power. For autocross and short-circuit events, fit the largest brake upgrade and stickiest rubber, then run a slight rear toe-in adjustment to encourage rotation under trailing throttle.

For the EK9 Forza Horizon car, the most successful community blueprints share a few common adjustments: balanced aero, tire compound matched to event surface, and gearing tuned for the specific Festival Playlist scenario rather than maximum top speed. The EK9 Forza Horizon car responds best when the tuner respects the chassis's inherent character rather than trying to mask it with extreme settings.

Trivia & Lore

Honda's Suzuka factory built only about 16,000 EK9s during its three-year production run, all in Championship White. Recent auction results show clean low-mileage examples crossing 70,000 US dollars in Japan and the United Kingdom.
