Real-World History
BMW Motorsport built the original M3 from 1986 to 1991 as a homologation special for Group A touring car racing. The car used a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine derived from BMW's Formula One program, with output starting at 200 horsepower and rising to 238 horsepower in the 1990 Sport Evolution variant. Production totaled roughly 18,000 examples, far exceeding the homologation requirement, and made the M3 commercially successful in addition to a competition winner.

In the Forza Horizon Series
The E30 M3 has been a Forza fixture since the original Forza Motorsport on the original Xbox. Horizon entries include both the standard M3 and the rarer Sport Evolution, with Horizon 6 also adding the four-cylinder M3 specifically used by BMW factory rally team in select markets.
The E30 Forza Horizon car appears across 6 entries: FH1, FH2, FH3, FH4, FH5, FH6. As a E30 Forza Horizon car entry, it sits in the B-class bracket at stock tune.
Tuning Notes
The chassis is well-balanced in stock form; tire upgrades produce the largest improvements. The factory four-cylinder engine has a sub-1,000 kilogram dry-sump iteration that produces over 300 horsepower in race-bred specifications, and approximating this in-game produces a competitive Touge build. Avoid swapping in larger engines from later M3 generations — the original chassis was engineered around the lightweight inline-four.
For the E30 Forza Horizon car, the most successful community blueprints share a few common adjustments: balanced aero, tire compound matched to event surface, and gearing tuned for the specific Festival Playlist scenario rather than maximum top speed. The E30 Forza Horizon car responds best when the tuner respects the chassis's inherent character rather than trying to mask it with extreme settings.
